April 27, 2014
If you have a classroom blog or website ( or even  a personal blog ) then you definitely need to set up a Google Custom Search for it. There are several reasons why you need to provide students with a search engine they can use on their classroom website. First it will  help them locate information faster and without having to leave the page. Second, Google Custom search engine allows you to specifiy the sites to include in the search. For instance you can create a search engine that searches only posts and articles from Wikipedia, your website or any other trusted website that might have some educational value to your students. In this way, you would not worry about students being  lost in a sea of junk websites while conducting online searches.

The process to create a Google Custom Search engine is very easy and simple. Here is a visual step by step guide to help you set up a Google Custom search engine for your blog or website.

1- Head over to Google Custom Search  and click on create a new search engine:

2- Specify the websites you want to add to your search engine. Don't worry, you can always come back later and delete or add new websites.

3- Click on control panel or on "edit search engine" to customize it. You can change its title, add a description to it, choose its language, add or delete websites.

5- Click on " look and feel" to customize how it would appear to others. Select the layout and theme you want.

6- There are two ways to share your search engine: the first one is through an embed HTML code which you can copy and post in your blog or website, and the second is through a public URL as a stand alone web page.
