I love rubrics and I find them particularly helpful in lesson plan designing as well as in assessing students work. I know some teachers and educators think of them as "so yesterday" but we need to view them as roadmaps that can guide you towards achieving your teaching/learning goals. Over the last couple of years, I have shared here a wide myriad of rubrics most of them are Ed Tech related. Over this weekend, I spent some time sifting through the piles of posts in this blog looking for materials and posts to help new teachers better integrate technology in education. The result is a list featuring some interesting resources that I highly recommend for any teacher planning to get their feet wet in the Ed Tech world.

A Rubric to Grade Students iPad Projects

Today's post features a practical rubric to use in class to grade your students iPad projects. This rubric ,which I learned about through Techchef4u, is created by Lisa and Mrs. Greathouse to help them "ensure that students would not just do the bare minimum while rewarding those who went above and beyond".
As you can see below, the rubric features 4 key criterion to base your grading on. These are content, writing process, layout, and graphics. Each of these criterion is assessed against a scale from 1 point (incomplete) to 4 points (exemplary). You might want to use this rubric to grade the projects your students do using iPad. It can also be a good model to help you design your own rubric that meets your own teaching needs.

A Handy Rubric for Art Teachers

Today I am sharing with you a practical rubric for Art teachers. I came across this rubric through this resourceful Creativity Board on Pinterest. As you see below the rubric is divided into 6 categories: material application and techniques, understanding of content, completion, tool responsibility, craftsmanship, and creative process. Teachers are to assess students artwork against these 6 categories assigning marks from 0 to 30. Depending on your teaching situation and your students learning needs, you might need to change or modify some of the evaluative criteria in this chart to fit your own teaching goals. Whatever way you use it, this rubric is a great example of the things art teachers have to pay heed to when assessing their students artworks.

A Powerful Rubric for Evaluating Web Content for Teachers, Parents, and Students

Here is another wonderful rubric from University of Wisconsin on the different criteria to use to evaluate websites . Students and parents can use it to assess web content in terms of its relevance to what is being taught in class. It can also be used as a tool for self-asessment and peer feedback.
This rubric covers 8 major criteria :
Content:
This criterion is for evaluating the usefulness of the content of webpages in terms of the information it has, the quality of the content, how frequently the content is updated, and whether it includes feedback loops such as surveys, forms or questionnaires.
Multimedia
This one assesses the use of multimedia elements in web content. These elements include, photos, graphics, sound, video and animation.It specifically looks into how these elements are integrated into the texture of the content and to what effect they are used.
Fair Use Guidelines
This one looks into how citations are being used (if at all) in web content
Internal and External Navigation
This criterion examines the validity of the the internal links ( links directing to other pages within the same website) and external links (links leading to content in other websites). It also looks into how the linking system is being built into the website and whether or not it facilitates users navigation.
Layout and Text Elements
This has to do with the typography of the web content: size and font of the text, the uses of headlines and subtitles, use of italics and indentations. It also examines the format of the page, the colour being used and the background and whether these elements enhance the general readability of the text or not.
Contact Person, Copyright and Update Information
Does the web page includes a a section where users can contact the author and read more information about the website such as the date of creation and copyright information ?
Speed Web Pages
Does the page load quickly? How images are featured into the web page and whether they include tags to help users get an idea of what they are about if they do not show up properly.
Writing Mechanics
This criterion evaluates the written content of a web page in terms of grammatical errors, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e.reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells.

Three Working Models to Integrate Technology in Your Teaching

Technology is obviously an essential element in our instructional toolkit. Knowing how and when and for what purposes to use this technology is much more important than the technology itself. Technology integration in instruction requires much more than just digital literacy and technical knowledge, it requires foresight, clear intentions, and well planned goals. The purpose is to meet students learning needs and as such technology is only a means to an end and not the end itself.
An important step in the process of effective integration of technology in education is having a pedagogical approach supported by a theoretical framework to ground your technology practices inside the classroom. Of course there are several frameworks to help you teach using technology but three approaches in particular stand out from the rest. These are SAMR model, TPACK model, and Marslow model.
1- SAMR model
SAMR is a framework through which you can assess and evaluate the technology you use in your classroom. This framework is made up of 4 levels:
Substitution
In a substitution level, teachers or students are only using new technology tools to replace old ones, for instance, using Google Docs to replace Microsoft Word. the task ( writing) is the same but the tools are different.
Augmentation
Though it is a different level, but we are still in the substitution mentality but this time with added functionalities. Again using the example of Google docs, instead of only writing a document and having to manually save it and share it with others, Google Docs provides extra services like auto saving, auto syncing, and auto sharing in the cloud.
Modification
This is the level where technology is being used more effectively not to do the same task using different tools but to redesign new parts of the task and transform students learning. An example of this is using the commenting service in Google Docs, for instance, to collaborate and share feedback on a given task task.
Redefinition
If you are to place this level in Blooms revised taxonomy pyramid, it would probably correspond to synthesis and evaluation as being the highest order thinking skills. Redefinition means that students use technology to create imperceptibly new tasks. An example of redefinition is when students connect to a classroom across the world where they would each write a narrative of the same historical event using the chat and comment section to discuss the differences, and they use the voice comments to discuss the differences they noticed and then embed this in the class website.
2- TPACK model
TPACK is a framework that combines three knowledge areas: technological knowledge, content knowledge, and pedagogical knowledge. This framework looks at how these trio works together to increase students motivation and make the content more accessible to students.
A- Content Knowledge:
This is the subject matter we are teaching like Math, music, Art..etc. It's the what.
B- Pedagogical Knowledge:
This is the how. These are the tools or methodologies teachers use to instruct their students: are they going to use direct instruction, inquiry based teaching, group discussion, debate..etc
C- Technological knowLedge
This is the partner.It looks at the digital tools ( google Drive, ipad apps, Smart boards..etc ) teachers can use to make content accessible to students while supporting the pedagogical strategy used in instruction.
Now lets look at the overlaps :
TP knowledge: helps us to understand how are we making content more accessible.
TC knowledge : allows us to identify the affordances of pairing appropriate technology to the content
PC knowledge : allows us to identify the affordances of pairing the appropriate pedagogies with the content

Abraham Maslow developed a theory of hierarchy needs that teachers can use to address students learning needs. This model is shaped like a pyramid and contains the following needs: physiological needs, personal safety, social affiliation, self-esteem and self-actualization. According to Maslow, the hierarchy needs theory is " an ideal way to assess lesson plans, courses and educational programs. By asking themselves whether these needs are being met in their school or classroom, educators can assess how well they are applying Maslow’s hierarchy to their teaching practice ".
In her wonderful article " Addressing Marslow's Hierarchy of Needs with Technology", Jackie Gerstein featured this handy infographic that "proposes some of the technology integration strategies that can be used to addresse the different levels of Maslow’s needs."
